Exactly Who Are the Columbiettes?

The Columbiettes is a Catholic women’s organization affiliated with the Knights of Columbus.  Its members always stand ready to assist the Knights of Columbus when needed.  The Columbiettes are dedicated to their Patronesses, the Blessed Virgin Mary, St. Therese, the Little Flower, and St. Joan of Arc.The Columbiettes are ordinary ladies who are proud of reaching out and helping those less fortunate by meeting the needs of the people in their communities and around the world.  They are also committed to the preservation of family life.

The Columbiettes Beginnings

The Knights of Columbus was founded on March 29, 1882 under the direction of Reverend Michael J. McGivney with twelve Catholic men.  Papal authority has designated the Knights of Columbus as “the right arm of the Church.” Through the years they have achieved much in the field of fraternity, unity, charity, and patriotism. 

In 1939, Monsignor J. Francis McIntyre conceived the idea of a ladies organization to work with the Knights of Columbus.  The New York Chapter of the Knights of Columbus formulated a plan for such an organization.

With the dedicated work and skillful leadership of the founders, the Honorable Margaret Mary J. Mangan, Leo Coyle and Charles Marucca, the Columbiette organization was founded.  The ideals of Columbianism are inspired by the principles of the Catholic faith.

On March 2, 1939 the first Columbiette Auxiliary was instituted in New York City.  Since then, the Columbiette organization has grown nationally. 

The Columbiette purpose is to:

• promote the spiritual, social and charitable welfare of our members
• to instill a steadfast conviction relating to the proper place and function of Catholic women in safeguarding the religious, civil, and economic rights of all Catholics
• to rely upon the intercession of Mary, our Mother and Model, for guidance in guarding the common good, and to work through her, on loving and aiding all members of the human family and to give assistance to the Knights of Columbus in all their activities upon request.

• The WHITE CROSSrepresents Christ’s love for us – by His Crucifixion He redeemed the World.
• The RAYSrepresent our zeal to serve God through the Mediums of Faith, Hope and Charity symbolized by the THREE WHITE STARS.

By conducting a variety of programs, we are bringing Columbiettes together as they can strengthen their bond of friendship within the Order.  The benefits from membership are many – spiritual, moral, educational and social.

As a Columbiette you can allocate your time as your daily schedule permits. To maximize your enjoyment and personal contributions, there are no specific  requirements or amounts of time to spend within the organization.  Everyone in the organization participates at whatever level of commitment that makes her comfortable.
